I’m minding my own business and changing into this cool one size fits all “cape” for my annual exam at Mosaic Health Care Plaza 1 Mammogram Dept. Would I mind if it would be a teaching event with an instructor and students? Well…..sure…. why not? Had this experience before in the hospital after a surgery with many students surrounding my bed, but I wondered would there be a man there? If so, I would have to wear my new sunglasses and go incognito….
Four women. It would take a while. They told me that. The latest technology machine. After every picture the instructor would discuss… What the heck, I didn’t have anything to do afterwards but dishes….
To tell you what happened I must tell you of a moment in my life when I was 19 and in labor at Monrovia Hospital in California with my baby girl, #1daughterconnie, she now, a grandmother of 9. I came from a background of self seeking parents who always found fault with me, so much so, I got married to get away…I was getting a spinal block and the nurse, probably a woman in her 50’s, a big woman, said “honey, sit up with your legs hanging down, put your arms around my neck like you are hugging me, the doctor will give you a shot into your spine, and I will hold you tight and you will be fine.” I have cherished that moment in my memories as one of my beloved moments! That nurse CARED! That nurse was not doing a job for a paycheck, she CARED FOR ME! She was doing her passion, her call, and I got a hug, an unconditional hug of tender love, a moment I have cherished all my life….
Fast forward __years….the tech had to wrap her arms all over me to position and take pictures. I had to believe this lady had to be her granddaughter! THAT caring, THAT calling…how wonderful to find myself amongst women that actually cared about ME. Those 4 women were so much fun. Outside that room others had to wonder what all that screaming and hysteria was all about. We laughed so hard, that I told them when we were done, I was just going to sit down and visit…”no no we need to go out afterwards…girl’s night out and have wine” one student offered. The other wanted me to come back often. I don’t think so, not for a year…hopefully. “I love your eye glasses, I’m going to slap you if you apply that pressure again”…”oh please forgive me, are you really going to hit me”? The instructor told them that I was not the normal, most patients don’t carry on like this woman…….
That made my day. I realized how special God had made me. Coming from a background of emotional abuse….. to making people laugh….Thank you Jesus for allowing me to walk where I’ve walked so You could show me what you created me for. Thank you for creating women to shop till they drop. This morning is Friday, garage sale day!
I was instructed, next time, bring the wine AND the glasses.
