#160…A Letter to my Dog

Well, I don’t have to tip toe around anymore sneaking out to my flower plots to do some work UNNOTICED by you! I swear you slept with one ear up listening for ANYONE to throw your ball. Your life was about your toys. I don’t know if people could believe that you lay there for hours holding your toy in your mouth…waiting. Funny how you would throw your ball up in the air and catch it.

I love you. My problems and my tears seemed to wash away when I held you in my arms. Being in your presence was so comforting. Man’s best friend. You taught me to understand that. Now I go about winterizing my gardens and find such a quietness, a sadness because you’re not there driving me crazy, barking and barking till I throw your toy. You programmed me to throw the ball 16 times and then I could enjoy my weeding…for about 15 minutes, then it was time to throw the ball another 16 times. After all, you had to stay in shape. Each year I threw one time less until last year it was only 3 short tosses…..This year I put you on a leash and we walked twice a day to keep you a little exercized.

Now you are in heaven. I found a picture at Rusty Chandelier Antique Mall of a famous print of a tan lab sleeping on a bed with his head on the pillow. I found a frame at Hillcrest Ministries Thrift Shop for $1 and cut the pic down to fit. It’s on the wall next to your big picture and I know in my mind that is YOU sleeping on God’s bed and He has tiptoed away UNNOTICED by you so he can have a 15 minute break to go take care of my granddog, Chewy who wants to go for a walk among the stars.

I found this wire metal dog at a garage sale for $8. It was already white and I spray painted the head black and that wonderful big black spot on your left hip! That is the flower plot Russ fixed for you. I miss you but I’m happy you won’t have to take a chance falling on ice this winter. ALWAYS IN MY HEART.  Your Mom.
